Heading Structure Analyzer

Paste an article’s headings and see the structure a crawler sees: how many H1s, whether levels skip, which headings are too long to scan, and whether the topic appears where it matters.

Input

Runs in your browser

Markdown (#, ##, ###) or plain lines. One heading per line.

Result

Paste your headings to check the structure.

One H1, then never skip a level

The H1 is the page title and there should be exactly one. After that, an H3 must sit inside an H2, never directly under the H1. Skipped levels do not break ranking, but they break the outline that assistive technology and featured snippets use to understand the page.

Headings are scanned, not read

Most readers see only the headings as they scroll. If the headings alone do not tell the story, the structure is wrong. A useful test: read the H2s in order — they should work as a summary of the article.

Length and keywords

Past about 70 characters a heading wraps in most sidebars and search results. The target phrase belongs in the H1 and one or two H2s, not in every heading — repetition reads as stuffing and adds nothing a crawler needs.

Where to go next

If the structure needs rebuilding, Blog Outline Builder generates the H2s. For sentence-level readability, try the Readability Checker.

How to use Heading Structure Analyzer

  1. Paste the article’s headings in order.
  2. Fix skipped levels and multiple H1s first.
  3. Shorten any heading that runs past 70 characters.
Questions

Heading Structure Analyzer FAQ

Do headings affect ranking?

They are a structural signal, not a magic keyword slot. Clear structure helps snippets, accessibility and the reader; that is the real benefit.

Can a page have no H1?

It can, but it is a wasted signal and hurts screen-reader navigation. Every page should have exactly one.

Should headings be questions?

Some of them, yes. Question headings match how people search and can win a featured snippet when the paragraph under them answers directly.
