Image File Name Generator
The file name travels with the image into Pinterest and into search. Turn a pin title into a clean, descriptive, hyphenated file name instead of IMG_4821.
Input
Runs in your browserUseful when you upload in batches.
Result
Enter a title to get file names.
Why the file name matters
Search engines read file names, and so do the people who download your pins. “small-kitchen-storage-ideas.jpg” tells both what the image is; “IMG_4821.jpg” tells neither. It is a small, permanent signal that costs one rename.
Hyphens, not underscores
Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, so “small-kitchen-storage” reads as four words and “small_kitchen_storage” reads as one. Lowercase everything: file systems and servers are case-sensitive, and mixed case invites duplicate URLs.
Keep it short and drop the stop words
Three to six words is plenty. Articles and prepositions add length without meaning, and very long file names get truncated in some upload flows. Leave out the year unless the content is genuinely dated.
Where to go next
Name the file here, then describe it properly with Alt Text Writer — the two are read by different audiences. Size rules are in Pinterest pin sizes.
How to use Image File Name Generator
- Type the pin title as it will publish.
- Pick the variant that fits your naming convention.
- Rename the file before uploading — not after.
Image File Name Generator FAQ
Does renaming a file after upload help?
No. The name is read when the image is first crawled. Rename before uploading, or re-upload.
Should I include the year?
Only for seasonal or annual content where the date is part of the promise. Otherwise it ages the pin.
Do alt text and file name need to match?
They should describe the same image, but alt text is a full sentence for a screen reader while the file name is a label. Do not paste one into the other.
