The limits that actually bite
Pinterest titles stop at 100 characters and descriptions around 500. Instagram captions allow 2,200 but only the first 125 show before “more”. TikTok is 2,200, YouTube titles 100 and descriptions 5,000, and X is 280. Reusing one caption across all of them means writing to the shortest useful limit, or accepting a trim per platform.
Characters versus what is visible
A platform limit is not the same as the visible length. Pinterest clips descriptions in the feed, Instagram hides everything past the first line, and Google cuts titles near 60 characters. The counters here show both the hard limit and the practical one where it matters.
Write short, then expand
Drafting to the shortest field first forces the point to the front. Expanding a tight 280-character version into a 500-character description is easy; cutting a rambling 900-character draft down to 280 usually loses the argument.
Where to go next

- Check which platforms it already fits.

Platform Limits Checker FAQ
Do emoji count as one character?
Here they count as their real UTF-16 length, which is what most platforms measure. A single emoji is often two units, so a caption full of them runs out faster than it looks.
Why does the count differ from the platform?
Platforms count in their own way — some by code point, some by grapheme. Treat these as close guidance, not a guarantee at the boundary.
What is the best single length?
Around 150–250 characters works on almost every platform and stays fully visible on Pinterest.
