The invisible characters that break things
A curly apostrophe (’) is a different character from a straight one ('), so “don’t” typed in Word does not match “don't” typed in a search box. Non-breaking spaces look identical to spaces and stop words from separating. Zero-width characters are invisible and can make a title fail validation for no visible reason.
What gets normalised
Smart quotes and apostrophes, en and em dashes, ellipsis characters, non-breaking and thin spaces, repeated spaces, tabs, and trailing whitespace on each line. Line breaks are preserved because they are usually intentional in a description.
When to keep typographic quotes
On a designed page, curly quotes look better and there is no matching problem. In a pin description, a form field or a CSV, straight quotes are safer. That is why this is a choice rather than a default.

Does it fix capitalisation?
No. There is a separate case converter for that; mixing the two makes it hard to see what changed.
Why do my quotes look different after pasting?
Some editors auto-convert straight quotes to curly ones on input. If that happens, paste as plain text or run the fixer again.
