A screen reader user hears the alt text instead of seeing the pin. “Small kitchen storage ideas for renters” is a title; “Open shelving above a washing machine holding jars and folded towels” is alt text. These lines are a starting point built from your titles — always check that they match what is actually in the image.
Keep it under 125 characters
Screen readers cut off around there, and long descriptions get skipped. One sentence, the main subject, the notable detail. Skip “image of” and “picture of” — the assistive technology already says it is an image.
Good alt text is also good SEO
Search engines read alt text as a description of the image. Accurate, specific wording helps both the person who cannot see the pin and the crawler that cannot either. Stuffing keywords into it helps neither and reads badly when spoken aloud.

Can I use the same alt text for every pin?
No. Duplicate alt text describes none of the images. Each line should say what is different about that pin.
Should the alt text repeat the title?
Only if the title genuinely describes the image. Usually the title is the promise and the alt text is the picture.
What about decorative images?
If an image carries no information, it should have empty alt text rather than a description. Pinterest pins almost always carry information, so this rarely applies.
